What do I do at Riverside?

earth
Good question!

In Rochester, as well as across the state, and across the country, school social workers provide a link between school, home, and the community. Our job is to promote student academic success by reducing social, emotional, economic, and environmental barriers to learning. We do this through a variety of ways, including:

• Working with students one-on-one, in small groups, or in the classroom to develop problem-solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills, deal with difficult or crisis situations (divorce, death in the family, move to a new school), and work to improve interpersonal relationships with their peers

• Connecting students and families to school- and community-based resources (health, mental health, housing, food/nutrition)

• Addressing barriers to school attendance

 School Social Workers Help Students:

  • Achieve maximum academic benefits from their educational opportunities
  • Develop self-control and take responsibility for their actions
  • Cope with stress
  • Develop social skills
  • Develop decision-making skills
  • Understand themselves and others

School Social Workers also help families with access to resources available within the community.

In my work at Riverside Central Elementary I hope to help create an environment of caring and safety so that all students and their families feel comfortable turning to school staff in search of assistance.

I try my best to offer choices and encouragement, as well as teach skills so each person can make decisions and solve problems independently. I encourage students to look at mistakes as learning opportunities that teach us some life lessons we have yet to learn. Supporting young people as they grow in these skills helps them develop self-esteem and self-confidence. They feel empowered to take risks in learning and make good choices, thus becoming better people!
